Yesterday OnePlus unveiled the OnePlus 8 Pro and OnePlus 8 and it became clear that the Pro is the manufacturer’s first officially certified IP68 waterproof phone. It was announced on stage, but there seems to be more to the story.
It turns out that some OnePlus 8s are also IP68 rated – those for US carriers. The news was first reported by Michael Fisher (@theMrMobile) and later confirmed by Verizon’s own website.
Verizon is selling the OnePlus 8 5G UW at a premium of $100, but it comes with mmWave 5G support, which certainly involved a major overhaul. The need for this may also explain why OnePlus decided to make this one IP-compliant.
T-Mobile has yet to upload detailed specs of its OnePlus 8 version to its website, so at this stage whether its units are also IP rated is unconfirmed.
Of course, part of the explanation could be that obtaining IP rating certification costs money and that OnePlus may have left carriers to foot the bill and they were only covering their own versions. We hope to get more information on this in the following days.
